Biography

Born in the family of a pharmacist. In 1949 he came to Paris with the dream of doing cinema. Failed in an oral exam at the Institute of Higher Cinematographic Research. Cinephilus constantly met Godard , Truffaut , Romer in the Paris Cinematheque , who soon formed a new wave in French cinema (Truffaut admitted that the new wave was born thanks to Rivett). In 1950, together with Romer, he founded the Newsreel . A critic, who constantly appeared at Les Cahiers du cinema from 1952 , he became the editor-in-chief of the magazine in 1963-1965 .

He worked as an assistant for Becker and Renoir , and also experienced a noticeable influence of the experimental theories of Rush [1] . He made several short films, in 1960 he shot his first full-length film Paris belongs to us .

Creativity

J. Rivett in 2006

Rivett was one of the few who continued to follow the principles of the new wave , upholding and making auteur cinema . His films, by commercial standards, are impossibly long and plotless, almost entirely improvisational. He willingly revealed the conventions of cinema art (scenes from theatrical performances are not uncommon in his films), which only emphasized the director’s penchant for surrealistic fantasy in everyday life, for the game and made critics writing about his cinema remember the names of Carroll and Cocteau .

Usually he worked with a narrow circle - a troupe or company - of actors, which included Bul Ogier (played in seven Rivetta films), Juliette Berto , Jean-Pierre Calphon , Ermine Carages , Sandrine Bonner , Emmanuelle Bear , Jane Birkin .
