History
The gallery opened in September 1990 with an exhibition by Russian artist Natasha Turnova [2] . Here were shown the first solo exhibitions in Russia by Andrei Monastyrsky , Semyon Faybisovich , Ivan Chuikov and Sergey Bratkov , Geliy Korzhev [3] . Oleg Kulik began his career here, from 1990 to 1994 as an art director, and then as a gallery artist. Projects of those years were included in the golden fund of Russian contemporary art, such as the 1992 “Animalistic Projects” installation festival. In 1994, the first exhibition of the member of the New Artists group, the drummer of the Kino group Georgy Guryanov , was held by Timur Novikov . In 2000, the Moscow career of the artist Sergei Bratkov began with an exhibition in the then Regina. Following the decision of Oleg Kulik to continue his career as an artist and his departure from the gallery, she expanded the circle of artists and began an active international activity. The first participation of the gallery in the international fair, Art Cologne in 1994, dates back to this time. Since then, the gallery has managed to take part in such world fairs as Frieze, Art Basel Miami Beach, Armory Show, Artissima in Turin and Vienna Art Fair [ source? ] .
The American curator Dan Cameron, who led the New York Museum from 1995 to 2006, made the On Beauty exhibition in the gallery in 1996, showing the works of Mariko Mori, Pierre and Gilles, Mike Kelly , Gabriel Orozco and Rirkrita Tyranania . For some Russian artists who are now widely known throughout the world, the On Beauty project was the first international exhibition. In the 2000s, OVCHARENKO worked with leading Russian artists Viktor Alimpiev , Sergey Bratkov , Oleg Kulik , Pavel Pepperstein , as well as with foreign authors - Claire Fontaine, Jonathan Mese , Ryan Mosley, Jack Pearson, Daniel Richter, Erwin AR with Russian, Ukrainian and European museums, and gallery artists receive invitations to participate in the Biennale in Moscow , Sao Paulo and Venice . In recent years, the attention of the professional community to the gallery and its artists has not diminished: in 2009, Sergei Bratkov received the State Prize “Innovation” for the video installation “Balaklava Courage”, and in 2014 Pavel Pepperstein was awarded the Kandinsky Prize for the project “Holy Politics” [ source? ] .
Animalistic Projects Installation Festival 1992
The festival consisted of seven original projects by artists Anatoly Osmolovsky , Tatyana Mashukova and Yuri Leiderman , Igor Chatskin, Vadim Fishkin, Boris Orlov and Oleg Kulik . Of all, even the project of Anatoly Osmolovsky “Leopards burst into the temple”, during which the gallery was inhabited by living leopards, did not impress the public as the action “Piglet gives presents”, which caused an unprecedented resonance in the media. As part of this action, a pig was killed and butchered by a professional butcher in the gallery, and meat was distributed to visitors of the vernissage [4] .
Apology of Shyness or First-Hand Art, 1992
The paintings from the collection of Vladimir Ovcharenko at the opening day were held in the hands of the soldiers of the internal troops, hidden behind the false walls. According to eyewitnesses, this created an incredible tension in the gallery. The author of the plan, Oleg Kulik, wanted this exhibition to become at the same time a metaphor for Russian serfdom and the tension experienced by persecuted figures of the Russian avant-garde for many centuries [5] .
Mutants, 1993
In 1993, the coryphaeus of the Soviet "severe" style, Heli Korzhev painted 13 paintings in a completely unusual manner for him: they depicted the fantastic creatures of the "turliki". It is widely believed that the adventures of the Turks became a symbol of the political intrigues of the perestroika period. "Mutants" became an important stage in the work of Helium Korzhev, and are very popular among collectors [ source? ] .
Willpower, 1994
The first gallery exhibition of the participant of the New Artists group, drummer of the Kino group Georgy Guryanov , curated by Timur Novikov [6] .
Melancholy, 1994
An exhibition of photographs by the famous “paper” architect Ilya Utkin “Melancholy”, which took place in the gallery in 1994, was shown in the Russian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2000 and received the Golden Lion [ source? ] .
On Beauty (1996)
The American curator Dan Cameron, who led the New York Museum from 1995 to 2006, made the On Beauty exhibition in the gallery in 1996, showing the works of Mariko Mori, Pierre and Gilles, Mike Kelly, Gabriel Orozco and Rirkrita Tyranania. For some Russian artists who are now widely known throughout the world, the On Beauty project was the first international exhibition [ source? ] .
Children, 2000
The Moscow career of the artist Sergei Bratkov began with an exhibition in the gallery. The most provocative project “Children” included photographs of children dressed up as adults who were playing in the basement scenes of brutal mockery of each other and adults. The project did not imply coercion: all the children were shot for a modeling agency, and their parents painted, who sincerely wanted their sons and daughters to have a modeling career. This series has become a classic of Russian art of the 90s and is in collections around the world, including the collection of Francois Pinault in Venice [7] .
