Street History and Its Names
The first buildings on the site of the current Gagarin Street began to appear in the XII century, in 1209, the palace of the son of Grand Duke Vsevolod III Konstantin and the Church of the Archangel Michael were built here. In 1221-1223, the princely palace and church burned down.
In the XVII century the Tsaritsynskaya Sloboda appeared on this place, from which the street inherited its original name - Tsaritsynskaya . The name may have been associated with Empress Catherine II , who on June 13, 1767 stayed in one of the houses on this street, and later, by her decree, development plans for Russian cities, including Vladimir, were developed.
In 1923, Tsaritsynskaya Street with a formal justification “in honor of the 6th anniversary of the October Revolution” was renamed Lenin Street, and in 1930 a peculiar toponymic couple was formed - parallel to Shishova Street was named Ilyich Street.
In 1967, the street got its current name. But the name of Lenin from the map of Vladimir also did not disappear, but was assigned to the avenue on the site of the ancient Yamskaya Sloboda, which was called ... Gagarin Street in 1961-1967.
The name of Yuri Gagarin is associated with the Vladimir region - on September 17, 1963 he came to Suzdal and Vladimir. The life of the astronaut tragically ended in the territory of the Vladimir region - in 1968, a training plane, in which Gagarin and pilot Vladimir Seregin flew, crashed near Kirzhach .
Monuments and Noteworthy Buildings
On the odd side:
- Number 7 . People's House (1905, architect J. G. Revyakin). At the beginning of the XX century, city meetings and rallies were held here, the provincial executive committee was located. The People’s House was one of the centers of the cultural life of the Vladimir people — a library worked here, performances were staged, and a drama theater was located in 1917-1972. Currently, it houses the Regional Puppet Theater.
- Number 31 . In 1901-1908, the writer Ivan Shmelev lived here, who served as an official on special assignments in the Vladimir Treasury. During these years, Shmelev wrote the stories “Vakhmistr”, “Ivan Kuzmich”, “Citizen Ukleykin”. In 1922, Ivan Shmelev emigrated to France , and house No. 31 on Gagarina Street remained the only building in Russia connected with the life of the writer. Currently, he is occupied by the regional House of Nature, Center for Environmental Education.
On the even side:
- In the place where Gagarina Street intersects with the Manege Dead End , the house of the civil governor was located, where in 1788 the future Admiral Mikhail Lazarev was born. In 1793, the Lazarev family moved to Bolshaya Street (now Bolshaya Moskovskaya St., 26), and the shattered house on Tsaritsynskaya, which was damaged by a fire, was broken a year later.
