Caretaker

Riding (accustoming to riding) of young horses has long been considered a dangerous business requiring art and experience. The caretaker was a specialist who teaches correct riding and riding young horses. In the Russian army in the 19th century, in every cavalry regiment , in every foot artillery brigade and horse-drawn battery , one guard was assigned, and assistants from the lower ranks were appointed to them ^[1] .

In the city of St. Petersburg from 1819 to 1882 there was a Bearer School , with the aim of special training for knowledgeable caretakers for cavalry and equestrian artillery units , as well as for dressage of officer horses ^[2] .

Currently, the position of a caretaker exists in circuses and commercial stables or pedigree farms that provide services for the maintenance, sale and training of horses, as well as horse riding training. Instructors are also often referred to as caretakers.

Preparing horses for sport is a bigger challenge. A sports horse very rarely remains all his life with one athlete; we can say that these are isolated cases. Horses are trained under different carers. Athletes with a high level of work have an average of 6 to 10 goals. Each lesson takes from forty minutes to one and a half hours a day. According to statistics, the competitiveness of horses is higher than that of those engaged in dressage.

Training of any horse depends both on the specifics of its activity and on the physical condition of the horse: jumping, practicing arena riding or elements of higher riding school, field work, work on the cord, and so on.
