It is practically insoluble in water ( solubility less than 0.1%), well soluble in acetone , benzene and other organic solvents.

Content

Application

It is used mainly as a fungicide and bactericidal agent. It is also used to impregnate packaging materials in order to protect fruits and vegetables during storage from rotting . The form of use is the sodium salt of dehydroacetic acid (Harven preparation), which has high solubility in water.

Dehydroacetic acid is also used in the cosmetics industry as a preservative (E265).

In the chemical industry has found application as a plasticizer for a number of synthetic rubbers.

Toxicity

LD50 for rats 1000 mg / kg. It does not irritate the skin and does not cause any chronic changes in the animal’s body, even when feeding them at a dose of 300 mg / kg for 7 weeks. The residual content is not standardized, since food products are not processed by the drug.

Getting

The laboratory method of synthesis is the self-condensation of acetoacetic ester in the presence of sodium bicarbonate [1] , the industrial method of obtaining dehydroacetic acid is dimetene dimerization.

Storage

Shelf-life Unlimited.
