Biography
The son of Vilnius Castellan and Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Michael Józef Masalski and Francis Masalska, nee Princess Oginska.
Since childhood, preparing for the dignity. At the age of fifteen, he became a canon of the Vilnius chapter. He studied since 1745 in a missionary seminary in Warsaw ; continued his studies in Rome , where he received a doctorate in theology and philosophy. Upon returning from Italy, he became a Lithuanian referendum and prelate of Vilnius.
He sought to liberalize religious life in Lithuania ; on his initiative, the Vilna Catholic Seminary was reorganized and its program was updated ( 1763 ); The history of Lithuania , Polish literature , and French were introduced into the program. He sought to ensure that the rural lower clergy in their activities used languages that were understandable to the flock. He promoted the ideas of the physiocrats , encouraged the education of the peasantry. In the Vilna Catholic Diocese, he created a network of elementary schools attached to churches , and wrote a school curriculum.
He patronized architects Laurinas Gutsevičius and Martin Knakfusu , the artist Francis Smuglevich . Through his efforts and at his expense, the Vilnius Cathedral of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav was reconstructed.
In 1772, he agreed to the first section of the Commonwealth .
He became a member of the Education Commission of the Commonwealth ( Commission of Public Education , Komisja Edukacji Narodowej ) and the first chairman in 1773-1776. At the same time in 1774 he was the manager of the public education fund. Accused of abuse, left the post of chairman (1777), but a member of the commission continued to remain to death.
In 1774, he spoke at the Sejm for the liberation of the peasants from serfdom and the allocation of land to them. In the same year, he transferred part of the peasants of his estate near the Abbot (now Cherven ) from the cantina to the chinsh [2] .
He was an opponent of the Constitution on May 3 (1791). He joined the Targovitsa Confederation (1792). He participated in the Diet in Grodno , which confirmed the second section of the Commonwealth (1793). In 1794, during the uprising, Kosciuszko was arrested and executed (hanged) without trial in Warsaw .
The ashes were transported to Vilna in 1795 and buried in the Cathedral of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav .
