Biography
The third son of Friedrich Wilhelm III and Louise Mecklenburg-Strelitskaya , brother of Friedrich Wilhelm IV and Wilhelm I.
He took part in the campaigns of William I, was considered one of the pillars of the conservative party. From his inheritance, the state acquired a large collection of weapons included in the Berlin Tseikhgauz . It was from the filing of Karl in the Prussian army by the decree of Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1842 that the famous "pickelhels" (leather helmets with a pointed peak on the top) were introduced, copied from the Russian sample, presented to the Prince by the Russian Emperor Nicholas I during a friendly visit of Karl to Russia in 1837 .
On November 26, 1869, the Russian Emperor Alexander II granted him the Order of St. George of the 4th degree and on October 22, 1872 the same order of the 3rd degree (No. 526 according to the cavalier lists ).
June 25, 1820 was awarded the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called [2] .
Family
In 1827, Karl married Princess Mary ( 1808 - 1877 ), daughter of Karl Friedrich of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna , daughter of the Russian Emperor Paul I. His wife was his fourth cousin's niece (both are descendants of the Prussian king Frederick William I and his wife Sofia Dorothea of Hanover ). Children:
- Friedrich Karl ( 1828 - 1885 ), married to Maria Anna of Anhalt-Dessau
- Louise ( 1829 - 1901 ), married to Alexis of Hesse-Filipstal-Barfeldsky
- Maria Anna ( 1836 - 1918 ), wife of Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel .
Since 1829, the Order Palace , renamed in his honor the “Palace of Prince Charles”, served as the residence of Prince Charles in Berlin.
