History
The construction of the castle was started by daimyo Kato Yoshiaki in 1603 on Katsuyama Hill. The castle originally had a five-tier main Tenshu tower.
The next owner of the castle, Tadatika Gamo, completed the construction of the Ninomaru , the second ring of fortifications around the main tower. After the death of Tadatik in 1635, Matsudaira Sadayuki became the next owner of the castle. In 1642, he completed the construction of a new three-story main tower. The descendants of Matsudaira continued to own the castle after his death.
In 1784, lightning struck the main tower of the castle, the tower was completely burned. The main castle tower that exists today was built between 1820 and 1854. The castle survived the Meiji restoration , but was partially damaged during the bombing during World War II .
In 1923, the castle was transferred to the city by one of the descendants of the Matsudaira clan. Since 1966, the castle has been rebuilt by the city. In 1968, a watchtower was re-built from concrete, in which weapons and armor were stored. The remaining towers of the castle are restored from wood.
