Description

Corner quarter block of USSR stamps , 1955 ( CFA [ ITC “Marka” ] No. 1843)

Depending on the location in the vintage sheet, a block can be:

  • angular , when it is located in the corner of the stamp sheet and includes fields of the stamp sheet on both sides; accordingly, in one sheet there can be no more than four corner quarter blocks;
  • with the field , when the quarter block includes the field of the stamp sheet on one side [4] . Quarter blocks are distinguished according to the position in the vintage sheet: (1) with the upper field, (2) with the side field, (3) with the lower field [5] . Quarter blocks with a part of the lower field, where the output data of the stamp sheet are distinguishable [6] , are of particular interest;
  • borderless (from any other part of the stamp sheet).

Quarter blocks as consisting of four identical marks should be distinguished from blocks consisting of four marks of different patterns and (or) different face values and representing couplings ( pairs ) connected horizontally (vertically, in a checkerboard pattern), as well as from post blocks of four marks [ 6] .

Quartblok is a common philatelic object and can be a separate type of collection of postage stamps. As part of a stamp sheet, a quarter block is of great interest in terms of studying the location of a particular brand in a stamp sheet.

If the quarter block contains fields of a stamp sheet, it represents a wide field for philatelic research for the presence or absence at the edges of a stamp sheet of watermarks , mail marks, special signs of a printing house , etc.

The quartble block is especially attractive for collectors : due to the fact that with such an arrangement of stamps (2 × 2), each of the two sides of the stamp is connected to the neighboring stamp, the quarter block is the smallest part of a sheet of postage stamps at which authenticity can be determined with a 100% guarantee or fake perforation (with simple perforation ). This is especially important when examining expensive, rare brands .

In Fiction

The story of the rare quarter block of pure stamps “ Pink Mercury ” formed the basis of the book of the same name by the Czechoslovak writer Frantisek Langer (1888-1965).
