The territory of the commune is 1239.4 km². The population is 13,276 inhabitants (2007). The population density is 10.71 people / km².
Location
The village is located on the island of Chiloe , 117 km to the south-west from the administrative center of the region of Puerto Montt and 14 km to the northeast from the administrative center of the province of Castro .
The municipality borders:
- in the north - with the commune of Ancud
- in the northeast - with the commune of Kemchi
- in the southeast - with the commune of Kinchao
- in the south - with communes of Castro , Curaco de Veles
In the west of the commune is the Pacific Ocean .

According to information collected during the census by the National Institute of Statistics, the population of the commune is 13,276 people, of which 6,663 are men and 6,413 are women.
The population of the commune is 1.67% of the total population of the Los Lagos area . 46.66% refers to the rural population and 53.34% - the urban population.
