GRAU Index (MO Ordering Office Index) is a conventional alphanumeric designation of an armament sample assigned by one of the Ordering Directorates of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR and Russia .
GRAU indices were introduced by the Chief and Rocket Administration (GAU, now GRAU ) in 1938 to designate artillery weapons in unclassified correspondence. A system for indexing weapons samples was developed (indexer).
In 1956, due to the fact that the indexer arr. 1938 exhausted its capacity and did not meet the requirement of state secrets, as well as in connection with the emergence of fundamentally new types of weapons, for example. rocket technology, the system has undergone a number of changes.
In addition, indices similar in construction began to be assigned by other Ordering Departments: URAF Navy , Air Force , Air Defense , Air Defense Forces , Gukos (now Space Forces) and others.
Design Principles
Index Structure
There are two main principles for constructing indexes: the "old", used from the 1930s to the 1950s, and the "new", currently in force.
According to the “old” principle, the index of the sample was as follows:
52-P-365
53-O-530A
The first two digits of the index indicate the GAU department, to which the sample belongs. The following departments are known:
- 50 - department in charge of which are materials;
- 51 - ... military equipment;
- 52 - ... the material part of artillery;
- 53 - ... unitary and separate loading rounds, shells, fuses, mines and mortar rounds, as well as containers for them;
- 54 - ... propelling charges for artillery and mortar rounds and their elements, means of ignition, shells and containers for them;
- 55 - ... aviation bomb weapons (shortly after the introduction of the indexing system, aviation bomb weapons were transferred to the Air Force Arms Department with the replacement of 55 in the indices by one 7);
- 56 - ... infantry weapons;
- 57 - ... infantry ammunition.
The letter, or their combination, located after the department number, indicates the type of sample, for example, for department 52, the letter P denotes guns, the letter M denotes mortars; for Division 53: RP - high-explosive fragmentation ammunition, BR - armor-piercing tracer, etc.
The three-digit number at the end of the index indicates a specific pattern. At the same time, the indices of the “old” have the following features: ordering numbers in increasing caliber, weight and size characteristics and types of samples (for example, in department 52, numbers 351–363 have 76-mm guns, numbers 365–372 - 85-mm guns etc.), correspondence of numbers of different departments (for example, 56-A-231 - 7.62 mm Simonov self-loading carbine (SCS), and 57-H-231 - normalized 7.62 mm cartridge for it).
The letter at the end of the index indicates the modification of the sample (for example, M - modernized) or design feature (e.g. for fragmentation shells and mines (53-O ...) the letter A denotes the material of the body - steel cast iron).
In 1960, the GAU became the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) and it introduced the “new” indexing principle. According to him, the index of the sample has the following form:
2A42
3OF25
In the “new” indices, the first two digits representing the GAU department are replaced by one, and the correspondence is preserved, that is:
- 1 - optical and radar devices, control systems;
- 2 - artillery guns and mortars;
- 3 - artillery ammunition;
- 4 - propelling artillery charges;
- 6 - infantry weapons;
- 7 - infantry ammunition.
In connection with the advent of new technology, primarily rocket technology, the notation system periodically underwent changes. So, if the indices of the existing divisions 2, 3, 4 were used to designate early rocketry models, later division 9 was introduced for the ground forces missiles. Also, for some missiles, before the transfer of them to the Strategic Missile Forces, division 8 was used.
The emergence of new types of Armed Forces required the introduction of new designation systems. At the same time, the new Ordering Departments mainly used the principles of building a “new” GRAU indexing system.
The Department of Armament of the Air Defense Forces assigned indexes with department number 5 to the products under its jurisdiction, and the Missile Administration of the Strategic Missile Forces used the existing department number for their products 8. Later, the Gukos General Directorate of Space Resources, which used to assign the indices, department number 11.
In the future, in connection with the rapid development of new technology, air defense air forces, air defense missile forces of the Strategic Rocket Forces and GUKOS introduced new departments.
The Air Defense Division introduced department 6, and the structure of the index became “reverse”, that is, the department number was placed at the end of the index, and the sample number was in front, for example. 48H6. It should be noted that a clear division into types of products using letters is not observed. This is also characteristic of department 5.
The RVS Strategic Missile Forces currently assigns indexes with department number 15, and the GUKOS uses department numbers 14 and 17.
There are also indices with department numbers 13 and 16. Such indices are assigned to the elements of capital construction, electricity and water supply to the Strategic Missile Forces and Space Forces.

URAV Navy and Air Force
Similar to the "old" indexing system are the Navy Missile and Artillery Arms Department and the Air Force Arms Department.
For naval artillery ammunition, the same principle of index construction is used, with the exception of the first two digits of the index, instead of which combinations A3 (for ammunition) or A4 (for charges) are used. Another difference was the numbering of the samples, which went in the order of decreasing caliber, that is, the smaller number corresponded to the larger number.
With the advent of rocketry in service with the Navy, a new notation system was introduced, which, however, retained the principle of the "old" indexing system, according to which products belonging to the same complex received the same or similar numbers, for example: 4K-75 - SLBM R -29 , 4D-75 - the engine of the 1st stage of this rocket, and 4D-76 - the engine of the 2nd stage. This notation is characterized by the first digit 4 and a two-digit number.
Later, due to the fact that the free double-digit numbers in the introduced system were over, an indexing system was introduced, in which the first digit (3) and a number of letter values were changed. If in the early system missiles were designated 4K ... (e.g. 4K-44), then in the late - 3M ... (e.g. 3M-80).
Air Force Weapons Directorate until the mid 1950s used instead of two digits at the beginning of the index, one, from 2 to 8. The number indicated the type of weapon, for example. the numbers 7 and 8 were used for bomb weapons. Otherwise, the structure of the indices repeated the structure of the "old" GAU system. Subsequently, the Air Force Air Force introduced a new notation system in which the first digit was replaced by 9, for example. 9-A-624. The new system had the following features: the elements that make up the head unit received the same numbers; the head product received an index of type 9-A ... and its constituent elements received other letters or their combinations. In this case, the type (missile, artillery or bomb weapons) was not reflected in the index of the head product.
