Chen Zhen ( Chinese trad. 陳 箴 , ex. 陈 箴 , pinyin : Chén Zhēn ; 1955 - December 13, 2000 ) is a Chinese artist, one of the pioneers of installation art in China. Born in Shanghai , where he received his art education, first graduating from the Shanghai School of Art in 1973 ( painting class), and then, in 1978 , the Shanghai Theater Institute (theater setting class). In 1986, for political reasons, as well as to continue his education, he left China and moved to Paris . He studied at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts ( 1986 ) and Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques ( 1989 ). In Paris, he began experimenting with installations, which he began to create from found objects of everyday life. The synthesis of physical and spiritual, as well as the themes of healing and communication, gradually came to the role of the central theme of creativity, largely under the influence of its own cancerous disease . He died of cancer in 2000 in Paris at the age of 45 years. Many installations remained incomplete (in 2007, their catalog “Chen Zhen. 1991-2000 unrealized” was released, containing materials for more than 30 installations).
