History

A new project of the French multi-purpose nuclear submarines, which should replace the Ryubi project, began to be created in 2002 . In 2006, the French government placed an order for 6 new class submarines. The contract amounted to € 7.9 billion , the completion of the first ship is planned for 2020 , according to the director of the Barracuda program Alain Opti ( French Alain Aupetit ), the commissioning of the following boats will be carried out with an interval of 1.5 to 2 years. When you enter each new Suffren submarine, one Ryubi submarine will be withdrawn from the fleet. The end of the program is planned by 2029 .

For the first time, foreign companies will be able to execute subcontracts for the construction of French nuclear submarines.

Design

The project embodies both the features of the modern Le Triomphant project , in particular the water jet, and modern foreign solutions, for example, tail placement of rudders will be made X-shaped, as on Dutch boats of the Valrus type .

Corps

Powerplant

One K15 reactor will have a life of 10 years between core overloads.

Armament

Four bow torpedo tubes of the boat will have a caliber of 533 millimeters. 20 units of ammunition can be composed of heavy Black Shark torpedoes and sea-based cruise missiles Scalp Naval (MdCN) and Exocet . Also, the boat will be able to carry up to 12 commandos with equipment in a special module attached to the submarine.

Benchmark

Boats of the Barracuda type are almost one and a half times as inferior in displacement to the British type Astyut and the American type Virginia , but they are twice as large as the previous Ryubi type.

The first ship of the project received the name "Suffren" ( fr. Suffren ) in honor of the French admiral Pierre Andre de Suffren de Saint-Tropez .

The remaining five submarines will also be named after the French naval commanders of the XVII-XIX centuries. They will receive the names Duguay-Trouin ( Duguet-Trouin ), Dupetit-Thouars ( Dupet Tuar ), Duquesne ( Dukesn ), Tourville ( Tourville ) and De Grasse ( De Grasse ). In 2015, it was decided to name the last two boats in honor of the submarines - participants of the Second World War: Casabianca ( Kazabianka ) and Rubis (Ruby).
