Langar (Sikhism)

Langar.jpg

Langar (Pangat) - food that is traditionally distributed in free canteens in Sikh gurudwaras . The term "langar" is also called the canteens themselves. The beginning of this tradition was laid by the first Sikh guru Nanak . The principle of Langar is the absence of any discrimination . All visitors should sit side by side and share the same food - the noble and commoner, rich and poor, prince and peasant. The creation of Langar thus became a practical implementation of the principle of equality. The Third Guru ( Guru Amar Das ) ruled that no one would receive his audience until he shared a common meal in Langar. In the langars they distribute exclusively vegetarian food so that people of all faiths can taste it.
