Galactan

Galactans - organic substances, complex polysaccharides built from galactose or compounds of galactose with other sugars ; general formula: (C 6 H 10 O 5 ) n . It is found in many plants (in significant quantities - in sugar beets ). Galactans form the main hydrocarbon part of agar-agar , plant gum and mucus. When galactans are oxidized , mucus acid is formed .

Galactans synthesized by the plant Anogeissus latifolia mainly contain α bonds (1 → 6), and galactan from acacia contains α bonds (1 → 3) [1] .
