History

Creation and the early years (1948-1953)

In 1948, the members of the APOEL club were divided into two camps, since their positions in relation to the civil war in Greece were opposite. As a result, the supporters of communism separated from the club and created their own team, calling it “Omonia”. Since then, Omonia has become a principal rival of APOEL. Omonia, until 1953, took part in the Cyprus Amateur League. Having won 4 championships and 5 cups, Omonia was admitted to the Cyprus Football Association to take part in the First Cypriot Division.

Start in Cyprus First Division

In the 1953-1954 season, Omonia took 7th place out of 9, barely escaping relegation. For a decade, the team's best result was 3rd place in the 1956-57 season.

In the 1959-60 season, Omonia ranks second after Anorthosis , 1 point behind the winner. The club wins its first title next season. The second title fell on the season 1965-66.

Golden Era

In the 70s, Omonia won 6 titles. By the end of the decade, the team had a total of 9 league titles and 3 cups . In the 80s, the club won the championship 7 more times, including 5 times in a row (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985). By the end of the decade, Omonia became the most successful team on the island, having won 16 championship titles.

1990—2000

The 90s were less successful than the previous two decades. During this time, Omonia won one league title in the 1992–93 season. After eight disappointing seasons, in 2001 the club won 18 champion titles, and in 2003 - 19. In the 2009-2010 season, the club won 20 titles.
