Biography
Born in St. Petersburg in the family of a successful lawyer Solomon Osipovich Gabrilovich and his wife Rosa Segal. He studied piano and composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Anton Rubinstein (1888-94), Anatoly Lyadov , Alexander Glazunov , Nikolai Metner and others. After graduation ( 1894 ), he spent two years in Vienna , studying the piano with Theodore Leshetitsky . From 1910 to 1914 he was the conductor of the Orchestra of the Munich Music Society . In 1917, he was arrested in Munich . Thanks to the intervention of Eugenio Pacelli (future Pope Pius XII), Gabrilovic was released and, through Switzerland , went to the United States .
Having settled in America, in 1918 he was appointed music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, preserving the career of a concert pianist. Accepting the offer to work as a conductor, one of his conditions was the opening of a new hall for orchestra performances, which served as the basis for the creation of Orchestra Hall.
In 1909, he married Mark Twain's daughter Clara Clemens, a singer. In the family was the only daughter Nina (1910-1964), who suffered from alcoholism and did not leave descendants.
Gabrilovich wrote a small number of works, mainly small works for his own playing the piano. He died in Detroit, is buried with Clara Clemens and her father at the Langdon site of Woodlown Cemetery in Elmira, New York State .
Among the students is the conductor Gabriel Yudin (son of the second cousin O.S. Gabrilovich) [1] .
