Tribology

Tribology is a science , a branch of physics that studies and describes the contact interaction of solid deformable bodies with their relative displacement. The area of tribological research is friction, wear and lubrication.

Etymology

The word tribology comes from the Greek root τριβ- verb τρίβω (tribo), literally "rub, rub." It was first used by the English physicist David Tabor ( born David Tabor ) and Peter Jost ( English Peter Jost ) in 1964, an expert in the field of lubrication, who drew attention to the problems associated with increased friction in machines, and introduced a new discipline - tribology.

Basic Information

Tribology studies friction processes directly, and tribological techniques study their application in machine nodes. In recent years, new sections have been developed in tribotechnology - tribochemistry, tribophysics and tribomechanics. For the first time the processes of friction were studied by Leonardo da Vinci.

Tribometry

Tribometry is a system of methods and tools for measuring friction forces , wear and carrying capacity of rubbing bodies. Measurements obtained directly in the process of friction interaction , allow simple calculations to determine the magnitude of the friction coefficient , wear rate, permissible loads, speeds and temperatures .

Friction

The main parameter characterizing friction is the friction coefficient:

μ=|F→||N→|{\ displaystyle \ mu = {\ frac {| {\ overrightarrow {F}} |} {| {\ overrightarrow {N}} |}}}   whereF→ {\ displaystyle {\ overrightarrow {F}}}   - friction force parallel to the relative movement of bodiesN→ {\ displaystyle {\ overrightarrow {N}}}   - reaction force of support.
