History

The first king, Mahapadma Nanda, died at the age of 88, and the entire dynasty ruled for about 100 years. The Nanda Dynasty was overthrown by the Mauryev Dynasty .

The first king, Mahapadma Nanda, was an adversary and destroyer of the Kshatriya clans; he defeated numerous kings and expanded his territory to the south of the Dean . The last king is Dhana Nanda. Plutarch tells about the Mauryev war against Nanda.

Nanda were of low origin. According to some sources, King Mahapadma was a sudra, according to others - the son of a barber and courtesan. Nanda is the first dynasty in India, the kings of which did not belong to the kshatriya clan.

The Nanda Dynasty are the first Indian kings to build an empire. They received the great kingdom of Magadha and wished to expand it as much as possible. They recruited an army of 20,000 horsemen, 200,000 warriors, 2,000 chariots and 3,000 elephants. But Nanda could not use this army against the Greeks, since Alexander of Macedon during the time of Dhan Nanda stayed in Punjab .

The Nanda Empire had a well-organized administration, a tax collection service, advanced infrastructure for that time, built canals, carried out irrigation.

King Chandragupta was able to overthrow the empire in 321 BC. e. who became the founder of the new Mauryev dynasty.
