Career

Since March 1910 - in military service (after graduating from the cadet school). Since March 1911 - lieutenant in the Guards Grenadier Regiment.

In September 1914, with the rank of lieutenant, the wounded was captured by the French. He spent the entire First World War in captivity, was released in 1919 . After his release in September 1919 he received the rank of captain, continued his service in the Reichswehr .

Since April 1938 - Major General. Since October 1938 - Head of the Department of the General Staff. In November 1938 he was appointed head of the intelligence department of the general staff of the ground forces. Since June 1940 - Lieutenant General.

From January 5, 1941 to June 5, 1942, he was the commander of the 30th Infantry Division , which participated in battles on the Eastern Front from June 22, 1941 as part of Army Group North.


November 23, 1941 - awarded the Knight's Cross. August 27, 1942 awarded the rank of infantry general.

From August 27, 1942, he was an adviser to the command of the 8th Italian army on the Don; from December 1942, he was actually the army commander.

From February 18, 1943 to June 4, 1944 - commander of the 12th Army Corps Army Group Center. In June-July 1944, he served as commander of the 4th Army . July 18 was seriously injured in a plane crash. July 30, 1944 - awarded with Oak leaves to the Knight's Cross.

From October 31, 1944 to February 22, 1945 - on the Western Front - the commander of the 1st Army in Lorraine, and then the 14th Army in Italy.

April 27, 1945 he was appointed commander of the 21st Army on the Eastern Front (in Mecklenburg ).

May 2, 1945 surrendered to the British troops.

Author of the books “History of the Second World War” and “The Results of the Second World War” (with co-authors).
