History
The city was founded in 1881.
Location
The city is located 612 km south of Santiago, Chile’s capital.
The municipality borders:
- in the north - with the commune Galvarino
- in the northeast - with the commune of Lautaro
- in the east - with the municipality Vilkun
- in the south - with Padre Las Casas
- in the west - with the communes of Nueva Imperial , Cholchol
Demographics
According to information collected during the census by the National Institute of Statistics, the population of the commune is 282,279, of which 136,146 are men and 146,133 are women.
The population of the commune is 30.12% of the total population of the Araucania region. 5.86% refers to the rural population and 94.14% - the urban population.
