Yuri Zlotnikov is considered one of the first abstractionists of the “thaw” period. A systematic approach to the organization of the artistic language distinguishes Zlotnikov’s work against the background of other manifestations of abstractionism within the framework of the neo-avant-garde, which to some extent inherits the pictorial systems of V.V. Kandinsky and P. Mondrian . His work had a huge impact on the development of Russian contemporary art of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of this century. In the early 60s, he developed a “signal system” in which he combined an artistic approach and scientific methods. She formed the basis of his own artistic language and style.

From 1943 to 1950 he studied at the Moscow Secondary Art School at the USSR Academy of Arts [3]. At the same time he studied in the sculpture studio at the museum of A. S. Golubkina under the direction of A. I. Grigoriev. He listened to lectures at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, visits the Tabor-Efimov house.
From 1951 to 1959 he worked as the chief artist-designer at VDNH in the pavilion "Science".
- 1954-1956 - worked at the Bolshoi Theater as a trainee - decorator, works together with A. Tyshler, V. Ryndin. I. Rabinovich,
- 1961-1979 - directed the children's art studio of the House of Pioneers of the Leninsky district of Moscow,
- 1955-1970 - collaborated as a book illustrator in Moscow publishing houses,
- 1974-1989 - collaborated with the print shop of the graphic arts factory of the Moscow Union of Artists.
Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1974.
After attending lectures on cybernetics and mathematics , he began to study abstract art in the mid -1950s . His interests in a close circle of like-minded people were shared by artists V. Slepyan and B. Turetsky , in particular, together with Vladimir Slepyan , the so-called “simultaneous painting sessions” were held, which can be called the most radical experiments in European art of those years, at the junction of non-objective and performative art [4] . He described Vladimir Slepyan as his like-minded person in art, with whom their creative paths diverged: “There was one friend - Vladimir Slepyan. He studied with me at an art school. Then he entered the mehmat, then again returned to art. In the 50s, we worked a little together. Soon he left for France, there he was engaged in various activities. We were the first abstractionists. But I did it very hard. I had my own direction, my own language. Slepyan was an intellectual artist in a broader sense, which is why we parted. And other art groups arose later, when I had already developed my own language ” [5] .
In 1956-1957 he developed the “Signal System” in the visual arts, within the framework of which a thorough rapprochement of the scientific and artistic paradigms takes place. Together with psychologists, he conducted experiments, trying to understand how the human brain perceives the signals sent by the pictures. In 1958, organized the All-Union Exhibition of Electric Welding in the pavilion "Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture" based on the "Signal System". Works from the Signals series are included in the collection of the Pompidou Center .
Since the beginning of the 1960s, the artist was fond of engineering psychology, industrial design: he made design projects for schools and factory premises. He was engaged in teaching at the Moscow branch of the Union of Artists of the USSR , of which he became a member only in 1972 .
In the 1960s and 1980s, he experimented with figurative painting, later returned to rethinking modernist abstraction and created not only paintings, but also prints on canvas.
In 1998, he received the silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts . He died in Moscow in 2016 at the age of 86. Retrospectives of Yuri Zlotnikov were exhibited at the State Tretyakov Gallery , Moscow Museum of Modern Art , the State Russian Museum , the House of Artists (Jerusalem), etc.

Quotes
- “The main idea of my work: we realize our mental activity. Art is a model of our inner life. Communication with mathematicians showed me that in addition to verbal operations, there is a simpler language - the language of our physiology. Many books have been published today; abstraction has become a fashion. If we were still interested in cognition, then today abstract art is a kind of position that carries a social burden ” [11] - Yuri Zlotnikov, 2013.
- “My line in art has a semantic-scientific character, I investigated the possibilities of the impact of painting on human thinking. All this made my fate more lonely, I could not have my own circle ” [5] - Yuri Zlotnikov, 2013.Yuri Zlotnikov
- “Zlotnikov’s laboratory work has thousands of sketches, sheets - it’s like endless pictures of physical particles in Wilson’s chamber. It is difficult to say which of them finally clearly distinguishes the signal from. Judgments of taste here cannot always be a reliable criterion, for the beauty of a composition can be deceiving, turn out to be a concession, even involuntary, to the experience of taste. It is necessary not only to evaluate each work, but to extract the meaning from their entire mass and apply this extracted meaning to a separate work in order to understand it ” [12] - Alexander Rappaport , 1991 .
- “Yuri Zlotnikov is frantic in his work, he considers each work a masterpiece and sacredly believes in its uniqueness. He works hard, varying infinitely by color, geometric shapes, finding in them an understandable and incomprehensible meaning. Therefore, his picture dedicated to Malevich's “Black Square” is very symbolic. He passionately disputes Malevich’s confidence that this work puts an end to the color attitude to the world. Yuri Zlotnikov, with his catchy, tense, energetic strokes, as if destroys the “Black Square” and shows the infinity of color sensations, symbolism and metaphoricity of the entire surrounding world ” [13] - Evgraf Konchin, 2004 .
