Intended use

“Search” is a multifunctional module; with its help, the Russian Soyuz and Progress are docked to the ISS, with MIM-2 supporting docking both in manual and automatic mode. Partially, the new module takes on the functions of the currently used Russian service module Zvezda.

“Search” also serves as a gateway through which astronauts go into open space for work on the outside of the station. Inside the “Search”, the ISS inhabitants have three cubic meters of space for cargo and scientific equipment with a total weight of up to 870 kilograms.

The “Search” module was docked only by means of the ISS Russian segment, I had to abandon the initial idea to use the “ Kanadarm2 ” manipulator due to the fact that Roscosmos and NASA could not solve the financial issues of its use [4] . Since the anti-aircraft docking unit of the Zvezda service module was not originally equipped with the Kurs antennas, it was decided to install the equipment necessary for docking by Russian cosmonauts during spacewalks. The ISS-20 expedition members made two spacewalks for this in June 2009 [5] .

According to Russian experts, the reception of Soyuz TMA spacecraft to the Search port will ensure the permanent presence of Progress spacecraft on the Pirs module and, accordingly, more efficient control of the ISS orientation along the roll channel using Progress spacecraft propulsion systems up to coming of the module " Science ".

On February 16, 2012 at 18:31 (Moscow time) cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov went into outer space. Flight engineers carried out the transfer of the 40-meter cargo boom ГСтМ1 from the docking compartment “ Pirs ” and installed it on the small research module “Search”. This operation is carried out in order to free the Pirs module from useful equipment in order to begin the new construction of the ISS. It is planned to dock the Nauka multifunctional laboratory module in place of the Pirs module. All extra-ship activity took 6 hours 15 minutes [6] [7] .

Options

“Search” was created with maximum use of the backlog on the docking compartment СО-1 “ Pirs ” and the ship-module “ Progress M-СО1 ” [8] . The functionality of the module has been expanded for research.
