Ganja-Gazakh economic region ( azerb. Gəncə-Qazax iqtisadi rayonu ) is one of the economic regions of Azerbaijan . It includes the cities of Ganja and Naftalan , as well as Akstafa , Gazakh , Dashkesan , Kedabek , Tauz , Goranboy , Goygol , Samukh , Shamkir administrative regions.
Area - 12,300 km² (14.4% of the total area of the country). The population is 1240.8 thousand people. at the beginning of 2015 [1]
The main underground resources of the region are oil , natural gas , pyrite , cobalt , barite , iron ore , alunite , limestone, marble , gypsum , zeolite , bentonite , cement raw materials, Dashkesan iron ore , Zyailik alunite , gold , copper , Khashbulag stone -limestone.
Electricity is represented by the Ganja, Shamkir and Yenikend hydroelectric power stations. A large hydropower potential has a part of the Kura River flowing through the territory of the district.
Production: in the region’s economy, heavy industry occupies an important place, represented by engineering , instrument-making, communication equipment, automobile repair and agricultural machinery enterprises.
- Light industry : The district is based on the processing of local raw materials. Processing agricultural products , food industry enterprises produce meat and dairy products, canned products, wine , cognac .
- Construction enterprises: house-building factory of wide panels, reinforced concrete, brick-and-ceramic, marble plants.
- In such cities as Ganja and Dashkesan there are enterprises for the primary processing of raw materials for non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy . Chemical plants operating in the city of Ganja produce sulfuric acid and potash fertilizers.
Agriculture: the cultivation of potatoes , cereals and viticulture are the main areas of agriculture in the region. Horticulture , fruit growing, vegetable growing and animal husbandry also developed.
Transit value: oil and gas extracted from the Caspian are transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan , Baku-Supsa , Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines that pass through the territory of this economic region. The main rail and road routes connecting Azerbaijan with Georgia and the Black Sea coast also pass through the territory of the region.
Tourism: Favorable climatic conditions make it possible to create here medical and health-improving complexes of international significance. In the area, at an altitude of 1566 m above sea level, there are recreation areas Goygol and Adzhikend , the world-famous medical and health resort Naftalan.
Social infrastructure: the area has a large number of libraries, museums, theaters, hospitals and other socio-cultural facilities.
