Apollonius of Ephesus ( Greek Απολλώνιος Εφέσου ; end of II - beginning of III centuries ) - a Christian church writer, author of an essay against the Montanists . Brief information about it is given by Eusebius of Caesarea and Jerome of Stridon . According to Eusebius, Apollonius was originally from Asia Minor. [1] Jerome writes that he gained fame under the emperors Commodus and Septimius Severus . [2] An anonymous author of the fifth century calls Apollonius the bishop of Ephesus , but this fact is called into question by historians. [3]
According to Eusebius, the work of Apollonius against the Montanists was written 40 years after the beginning of the preaching work of Montana, that is, about 212 years . Jerome calls the work “a significant and lengthy volume, ” while Eusebius quotes seven small passages from it and does not speak of the total volume of the work. In his polemic with the Montanists, Apollonius denounces not only their differences with the Christian dogma, but also denounces the vices of their prophets and confessors. The work of Apollonius was studied by Tertullian , who dedicated to him the 7th volume of the treatise On Ecstasy , which he tried to refute the charges against the Montanists.
The composition of Apollonius is included in the 5th volume of Patrologia Graeca .
