Masumura, Yasuzo

Yasuzo Masumura ( Japanese: 増 村 保 造 Masumura Yasuzo: August 25, 1924 , Kofu , Yamanashi November 23, 1986 ) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter . The author of numerous film adaptations of works by Japanese authors of the 20th century (especially Tanizaki, whose aesthetics were very close to Masumura), as well as Japanese classics ( Chikamatsu Mondzaemon ). He was heavily influenced by European cinema. Many of Masumura’s mature works are characterized by refined eroticism , a moving narrative structure, and emphasized theatricality.

Biography and Creativity

He studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo , but gave up the prospect of joining the elite of Japanese society and dropped out of the university. In his student years he met with Yukio Mishima , with whom he later collaborated more than once in the production of films. In 1947, he began working as an assistant director at the Dayai Studio, and also entered the University of Tokyo again, this time at the Faculty of Philosophy (graduated in 1949 ). After winning a grant , he went on an internship to Italy, where he studied at the Experimental Cinema Center with Michelangelo Antonioni , Federico Fellini and Lucino Visconti . After returning in 1953, he began to assist such directors as Kenji Mizoguchi and Kon Ichikawa . The directorial debut came in 1957 , when Masumura made the film “Kisses”. Over the next three decades, he directed about 60 films in a wide variety of genres. In a number of works central for Masumura's work (The Red Angel , Swastika , Tattoo , etc.), the main roles are played by actress Ayako Wakao . Suddenly died in 1986 from a brain hemorrhage .
