Death doom metal

Death-doom-metal ( death-doom or “doom-death” ) is an extreme subgenre of metal , combining the leisurely pace and gloomy atmosphere of doom-metal with growling and double barrels of death-metal . [1] The subgenre appeared in the mid-1980s and gained some popularity in the 1990s, but became less common around the turn of the 21st century. [1] In turn, death-doom metal spawned closely related funneum-doom , as well as more melodic and romantic gothic metal .

History

Doom / death arose in the mid-1980s when early predecessors, such as Dream Death, began to mix traditional doom metal with the sound of a thrash scene and a nascent death scene. [2] The early recordings of the bands Paradise Lost , My Dying Bride and Anathema (also known as “Peaceville trinity”, as all three were released on Peaceville Records at that time) combine the sound of Celtic Frost and Candlemass from the mid-1980s, with the addition of female vocals , [3] keyboards and, in the case of My Dying Bride, violins. The influence of the trinity was recognized by Within Temptation , Lacuna Coil , The Gathering , Celestial Season and Saturnus . [1] [4] By the end of the 1990s, death / doom lost its popularity when many bands changed their hard sound to a lighter and more acceptable for a wide audience. [1] However, the subgenre remained in the form of a funeral thought that appeared in the mid-1990s, in particular, thanks to the Finnish groups Thergothon , Unholy, and Skepticism . [five]

Characteristics of the genre

The reference dumdat is usually referred to the “dark” directions of the metal - due to the gloom imparted by low-tuned guitars, active bass drums, general leisurelyness and the widely used “growling” vocal technique, due to which the frequency range of the sound of the dodet often lies in very low ranges, thereby creating a “mystical” and gloomy, cold atmosphere and mood in the listener.
