Career Summary
In the past, a Greco-Roman style fighter, European champion among young men at the age of 14. I could not continue the career of a classic wrestler due to excess weight over 120 kg. He made his debut in Maedzumo - the input, non-league sumo league - in November 2002. Already after 19 tournaments - the record of the Japanese wrestling - he won the second in the hierarchy title ozeki and held it for 47 tournaments (the fourth result in history). The peak of the career of the Bulgarian giant was May 2008, when Kaloyan won the Emperor’s Cup and wore the unofficial title of tsunatori (contender for the title of yokozuna ). In February 2010, he announced that he wanted to completely connect his life with sumo, and, at the end of his career, to remain in Japan as an oyakata coach. In 2014, he accepted Japanese citizenship, renouncing Bulgarian citizenship, and officially changed his surname to Ando (his wife’s maiden name) [1] .
In September and November 2013, Kotoosyu was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injuries (damage to the muscles of the back of the thigh and dislocation of the shoulder), which led to the loss of the title of ozeki. In the January 2014 bashe, he performed the rank of sekivake and was unable to win 10 victories necessary to return the title of ozeki [2] . In March 2014, after 9 defeats in a row, he decided to end his career [3] .
After resignation, he continues to work at Sadogatake School; until February 2015, he used the temporary license that was assigned to him as an ozeki, then he became the owner of the Naruto license [4] .
In 2017, oyakata Naruto (formerly ozeki Kotoosyu) separated from Sadogatake-bey and opened, with the permission of his former coach-mentor and the Board of Directors of the Japanese Sumo Association, his own school.
Kotooshu, who became famous as the first European to win the Emperor’s Cup and received the title of ozeki, entered the history of sumo and as the first “European system”.
The license of oyakat (trainer-mentor) is not available to foreigners. Kaloyan Stefanov Makhlyanov (after the marriage of Karoyan Ando) became a subject of the Emperor of Japan in 2014, two months before the end of his career as a hero.
Wrestling Style
Possessed of physical data, rare for a sumo wrestler, with very large growth (2.03 m) he had an average combat weight (a little over 150 kg). Growth and long arms gave him an advantage in grabs and throws, but, on the other hand, great growth harmed stability. For this reason, technical fighters of small stature, for example, Toyonoshima and Harumafuji, successfully fought with him. The fighter’s style was controversial: brilliant fights (he was one of the few who defeated Asasyoryu in 2005) alternated with plain and defensive fights based on tricks.
Family
In February 2010, he had a wedding with a 30-year-old Japanese woman named Asako Ando, [5] a bride older than three years. [6] At the end of 2011, his son was born. [7]
State Awards
In July 2009, he was awarded the 1st Stara Planina Order for his exceptional contribution to the development of Bulgarian-Japanese relations.
