Biography

Formed under the significant influence of his elder (17 years old) brother Robert Freund , Etelka Freund in 1890 - 1895 . She studied in Budapest with István Toman , then in Vienna with Theodore Leshetitsky and, on the advice of Johannes Brahms , with Ignatz Brüll and Oisebius Mandyczewski (theory of music). Bramsu played weekly for a year [1] .

From 1898 she studied in Berlin with Ferruccio Busoni ; according to some testimony, Busoni considered Freund his best student [2] , and when news of the victory of his student Emil Bosque at the Rubinstein competition in 1900 , according to Allan Evans , spoke in the sense that this victory Bosque is obliged to ban women from participating in the competition [3] .

In 1901 , Freund debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Busoni in a concert of works by Beethoven , Brahms and Liszt . This was followed by performances in various European countries. The performance of Ethelka Freund's early piano pieces by Bela Bartok [2] , with which she studied with Toman in Budapest, was of particular importance; Friendship with Bartok Freund carried through the decades: in the memoirs of the son of Bartók, it is told that when in 1945 the manufacturer took the piano from the dying composer, leased to him, on the grounds that he would not be able to perform, Freund and her son Bartok immediately transported his only instrument [4] .

In 1910 , Freund married and left the music, devoting himself entirely to the family and raising two sons. However, in 1936 , her husband, an engineer, lost his job, and Freund returned to the stage - performing in Holland, London and Hungary. In 1946 , her eldest son [5] , American intelligence officer Nicholas Milroy ( Eng. Nicholas Milroy ), organized the Freund Relocation to the USA , where she spent the rest of her life, occasionally giving concerts (the US debut in the National Gallery , Washington, 1947). During these performances, as well as performances on the radio, several records were made (some of them were republished on CD) [6] , which are highly valued by collectors.
