Biography
In 1930, when José Afonso was in his first year, his parents left for Angola , leaving the baby weak with his uncle and aunt. Uncle began to raise his nephew Republican and anticlerical . In 1933, at the request of his mother, José Afonso goes to Angola, where he enters school and lives for the next three years.
In 1936 he returned to Portugal , and in 1937 he moved again to his parents in Mozambique . In 1938, Jose Afonso returned to his homeland, but to another his uncle. He was a fascist and gave his nephew to a youth fascist organization. He remembered these years as the worst in his life.
In 1945, he began to sing at the university , several times he fell through exams and got married. In 1949 he began to study history and philosophy . The dissertation was written by Jean-Paul Sartre . Actively participated in the left revolutionary movement.
On April 25, 1974, the song “ Grandola, a swarthy little village ” by Jose Afonso sounded on the Catholic channel, which became the signal for an uprising against the fascist dictatorship - the Carnation Revolution . This song has become the unofficial anthem of the revolution.
