Nykos (Nikolaos) Beloyannis ( Greek Νίκος Μπελογιάννης , December 22, 1915 - March 30, 1952 ) - Greek politician, anti-fascist , member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece . Biography
He studied at the gymnasium and then at the law faculty of the University of Athens, from where he was expelled for revolutionary activity.
He was a member of the Organization of Communist Youth of Greece (OKNE) and in 1934 in the Communist Party of Greece (KKE).
In the late 1930s, he was arrested by security services of the regime of Ioannis Metaksas and imprisoned in Nafplion , from where he was transferred to the Nazi occupation authorities in 1941. He fled in 1943 and joined the Greek partisans .
In 1943-1944 - Commissioner of the division of the Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS).
During the Civil War in Greece ( 1946 - 1949 ) Beloyannis led one of the military groups of the Democratic Army of Greece . One of the last left his homeland after her defeat.
In June 1950 he returned to Greece to restore the Athenian organization of the KKE . On December 20, 1950, he was arrested by the authorities, accused of betrayal and espionage in favor of the USSR .
On October 19, 1951 , the trial of him and his 94 comrades was started. One of the three judges is Georgios Papadopoulos , the future head of the “black colonels” junta.
Like Georgy Dimitrov , Beloyannis turned the trial of himself into a court of dictatorship . It is becoming known throughout the world as a “man with a carnation, ” whose image is captured in one of the sketches of Picasso's work.
- “If I renounced, I would be pardoned and possibly with great honors ... But my life is connected with the history of the KKE and its activities ... Dozens of times I faced the dilemma: To live, betraying your beliefs, your ideology or die, remaining faithful to them. I always preferred the second way and today I choose it again ”, - These words of Beloyannis were told to the military tribunal in November 1951 [1]
Despite national and international protest campaigns, the court sentenced Belojannis to death (only thanks to the pregnancy of his wife, Ellie Ioannis , the death penalty was replaced by a lengthy prison sentence). March 30, 1952 he was shot .
In his honor, the Hungarian city of is named ( Hungarian. Beloiannisz ), where Greek political emigrants lived. The Greek writer Alexis Parnis dedicated Beloyanis "Poem about Beloyannis" or "The Legend of Beloyannis." The Soviet poet Samuel Marshak also wrote about Beloyannis, his wife and daughter, the poem "In the Athenian prison" [2] Nazim Hikmet dedicated Beloyannis poem "A man with a carnation"
