History

On the spot where in ancient times there was a cemetery, in 1624, at the expense of George Litavor Khreptovich , the Castellan of Smolensk , a small wooden church was built in honor of the holy apostles Philip and James . During the war of 1655, the Dominican church burned down, in 1684 a new wooden church was damaged by another fire.

The construction of the stone building began in 1690 and continued in several stages until 1737 . The building was damaged during the shelling of Vilna by Russian artillery in 1794 during the Kosciuszko uprising .

In the church there is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God, taken out by Gonsevsky from Russia and stored for a long time in his estate of Double, until it was transported to this church.

In 1812, the French equipped a hospital in a church, then a warehouse. After the war, the temple again had to be repaired. Near the church and further continued to bury the dead. At the church was a hospital , known as the Hospital of St. James; The hospital became the first secular hospital in Vilna.

After the Second World War in 1948, the temple was closed. At first the building was used as a fruit and vegetable warehouse, then the warehouse of the Opera and Ballet Theater . The buildings of the hospital and monastery were occupied by the hospital.

In 1992, the church was returned to the Dominicans; Since 1993, the monks have settled in the returned monastery building. The hospital in the former hospital became the St. James Catholic Hospital. The hospital was located here until 2003.

Guard Status

The ensemble of buildings of the Dominican monastery, including a temple, a monastery building and a fence and covering an area of ​​8449 m 2 , is an object of cultural heritage of national importance; Code in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Lithuania 1073 [1] .
