History

The modern airport in the Huadu district was opened on August 5, 2004 , replacing the previous airport of the same name, which had existed for seventy-two years (it is now closed). The new airport, worth 19.8 billion yuan, is almost five times more than its predecessor. The second stage of construction was completed in 2009, as a result of which the airport capacity doubled [2] [3] . At present, the Guangzhou Metro Station is operating.

The opening of the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport solved most of the problems of the old airport, which, being within the city limits, was crowded and could not expand. The opening of a new airport made it possible to receive and produce aircraft around the clock. As a result, China Southern Airlines were able to effectively plan intercontinental flights, departing late in the evening. Other airlines also got this opportunity.

“Baiyun” ( Chinese trad. 白雲 , ex. 白云 , pinyin : báiyún ) means “white clouds” in Chinese, the name of the airport was borrowed from Mount Báiyúnshān near the old airport. The airport is also often called "New Baiyun", unlike the former airport, but this name is not official.

Airlines and Destinations

From the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, flights are operated in about a hundred directions, mainly domestically [4] . Also, this airport is the base airport of China Southern Airlines [4] [5] .
