Biography

Petrov’s grave in the Necropolis of Artists in St. Petersburg.

S.K. Zaryanko . Portrait of opera artist Osip Afanasevich Petrov. 1849 year.

Since childhood, he sang in a church choir, independently learned to play the guitar. He was taken to his uncle, his mother’s brother, a merchant, in order to distract him from “musical nonsense” and bring him to business. But the businessman from the future singer did not work out, his nephew left the unhappy uncle. In 1826 he joined the Zhurakhovsky touring company, first performed in the vaudeville by Katerino Kavos to Shakhovsky ’s text “Kozak the Poeter,” and soon became a member of the Ivan Fyodorovich Shtein troupe, where he met theater actor Mikhail Shchepkin , who had a great influence on his creative development. After several years of performing in provincial cities in 1830, the singer ended up in St. Petersburg, where he was enthusiastically received by the public. At the Mariinsky Theater , he worked until the end of his life - from 1830 to 1878. Having made his debut in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute , he soon became one of the leading opera soloists in the capital, playing bass parts in compositions by Meyerbeer , Rossini , Bellini and other composers. Petrov also improved in the theory of music and playing the piano with I.K. Gunke and in singing with Kavos.

The real finest hour of Petrov was the premiere in 1836 of Glinka 's opera Life for the Tsar (Ivan Susanin), in which he played the title role. At that time, two different operas on the same plot were going on at once on the stage of the feat of the peasant Ivan Susanin — Glinka’s opera and Katerino Kavos’s opera, and Petrov sang both of the title parts in two productions [2] . Other parts written especially for Petrov and performed with brilliance by him include Farlaf ( Ruslan and Lyudmila Glinka), Melnik (The Mermaid ), Leporello (The Stone Guest by Dargomyzhsky ), Uzia, Vladimir ( Judith , Rogneda " Serova ), Ivan the Terrible ( Pskovityanka " by Rimsky-Korsakov ), Varlaam (" Boris Godunov " by Mussorgsky ), Gudal (" Demon " by Rubinstein ), Kochubey (" Mazepa " by Tchaikovsky ). The singer participated in the operas of French and Italian composers, sang the part of the Unknown (“ Askold's Grave ” by Verstovsky ).

In April 1876, the fiftieth anniversary of Petrov’s stage career was celebrated at the Mariinsky Theater . He was presented with a gold medal from the emperor and a gilded laurel wreath, on each sheet of which was engraved the name of one of the operas in which he sang.

The volume of Petrov’s voice was more than two and a half octaves: from B 1 (B-flat of the contract octave) to fis 1 (F-sharp of the first octave). His singing was distinguished by warmth, depth and clarity of intonation. Possessing good acting skills, Petrov successfully performed both dramatic and comic roles in Russian and foreign operas.

Petrov was married to Anna Vorobyova , who was also an outstanding opera singer.

He was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery [3] . In the 1930s, the burial was transferred to the Necropolis of Artists of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg .
