Biography
Jeffrey Lynn was born on December 30, 1947 in the family of Phillip and Nancy Lynn in Birmingham. He was the fourth child in the family. Since childhood, fond of music. It is believed that Lynn drew inspiration at a 1961 Concern by Cause Shannon . At the insistence of his father attended piano lessons. I asked my parents for a plastic guitar for £ 2, and this toy later played a huge role in his life. After buying a guitar, his school performance fell to a critical level, and in the end he had to leave school.
After that, Jeff first worked in an auto parts store, then became an employee of an architectural bureau. In parallel with his work, Jeff finally began playing in amateur bands such as Tinkerbells Fairydust and Andycaps. Later there was a group of "Chantells", in which the future partners of the Electric Light Orchestra played - Richard Tendy and Dave Morgan. Then there were the bands Idle Race and The Move . In 1970, Lynn met Roy Wood, the future creator of ELO . Wood then told Jeff that he would very much like to put together a team - a sort of mix of a rock band and a classical orchestra.
Jeff Lynn's best-known works in ELO are “10538 Overture” ( The Electric Light Orchestra album, 1971), “Eldorado” and “Can't Get It Out Of My Head” (album Eldorado , 1974), “Evil Woman” and “ Strange Magic ”( Face the Music , 1975),“ Livin 'Thing ”,“ Telephone Line ”,“ Shangri-La ”( A New World Record , 1976),“ Mr. Blue Sky "," Sweet Talkin 'Woman "( Out Of The Blue , 1977)," Confusion "," Don't Bring Me Down "," Last Train To London "( Discovery , 1979)," Ticket To The Moon " , Twilight ( Time , 1981) and many others.
In 1988–1990, he participated in The Traveling Wilburys supergroup , which he formed with George Harrison after co-recording George's album “ Cloud Nine ”. The supergroup has released two albums - “Traveling Wilburys Volume 1” and “Traveling Wilburys Volume 3” and many singles.
Lynn produced the recordings and co-wrote songs by artists like:
- The Beatles (songs “ Free As a Bird ” and “ Real Love ”, 1994–1995 - a reunion of three Beatles for reworking John Lennon's demo recordings for The Beatles Anthology )
- George Harrison (entire album " Cloud Nine ", 1987)
- Ringo Starr (songs from the album " Time Takes Time ", 1992)
- Paul McCartney (songs from the album " Flaming Pie ", 1997)
- Tom Petty (three albums entirely - " Full Moon Fever ", 1989; " Into The Great Wide Open ", 1991; " Highway Companion ", 2006).
- Roy Orbison (songs from two albums " Mystery Girl ", 1989; " King Of Hearts ", 1992)
- Del Shannon (songs from the album " Rock On ", 1990)
- and many others in the 1990s - 2000s.
It is said that John Lennon once said that "it becomes more and more difficult to write music - Jeff Lynn has already written everything." George Harrison refused to cooperate with Lynn while working on his next album, stating in the hearts that his (Harrison) albums become similar to ELO.
In addition to significant participation in the recordings of other artists, Jeff Lynn released two solo albums - Armchair Theater in 1990 and Long Wave in 2012 (the last is an album of covers of songs more than 50 years ago). ELO's "Zoom" albums, 2001 and "Mr.Blue Sky: The Very Best Of", 2012 are actually Lynn's solo recordings as well.
It can be argued that the group Electric Light Orchestra is Jeff Lynn, because he is the author of all the music and lyrics, with rare exceptions (in the first album of ELO - “No Answer” the author of several songs is the second creator of ELO - Roy Wood , and also the song “Roll Over Veeethoven” is a cover of Chuck Berry ). Lynn created his own unique, easily recognizable style, when classical instruments begin to sound in a new way, in an unusual manner. He wrote many works for the movie. Since 1987, Jeff Lynn has formed his modern style of sounding, which he contributed to almost all the recordings in which he participated or produced, and which has not changed for the last 25 years.
In March 2010, in an interview with the Daily Express newspaper, Lynn confirmed that “he is working on a pair of albums under his own name”. In 2012, Joe Volsh released the album Analog Man , produced by Lynn [2] . A compilation of the best ELO hits called Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra was released on October 8, 2012, simultaneously with Jeff's second solo album, Long Wave [3] .
On February 9, 2014, Lynn sang George Harrison’s “ Something ” at The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles concert, and also “Hey Bulldog” from Yellow Submarine with Dave Grohl in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Beatles on the show Ed Sullivan [4] .
April 23, 2015 Jeff Lynn received the Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame [5]
On September 14, 2014, Jeff Lynn made his first public appearance in 25 years during the BBC Radio 2 festival in Hyde Park [6] .
September 24, 2015, under the brand name Jeff Lynne's ELO , released the first single from the album Alone in the Universe . The album itself was released on November 13 [7] , followed by ELO television performances - in the United States for the first time in 30 years.
