Content

Geography

The city is located at the confluence of the Karalvey river into the Bolshoi Kepervey river ( Kolyma basin ) on the left side, 653 km from Anadyr . The distance to Magadan is 1160 km, to Moscow - 6500 km.

History

In 1955, geologists discovered the first alluvial gold in industrial concentration in the valley of the Karalvaam River. The construction of the Karalvaam gold miners base began (from Chukot . “ Karal ” - a corral for deer, “ waam” / “wei ” - a river). Since the bulk of the geologists arrived from Seymchan , the first street of the village under construction was called Seymchan .

On February 10, 1956, by the decision of the Executive Committee of the East Tundra District, the town of Karalvaam was renamed Bilibino, in honor of the discoverer of the Golden Kolyma - geologist Yuri Bilibin .

On August 2, 1961, the center of the East Tundra region was moved from the village of Anyuysk to the village of Bilibino, and the East Tundra district was renamed Bilibinsky.

The status of the city of Bilibino received June 28, 1993 [3] .

In 2010, Bilibino became the center of the newly created municipality. The urban settlement of Bilibino , which included the rural settlement of Keperveyem [4] .

As of January 1, 2019, in terms of population, the city was on the 1065th place out of 1115 [22] cities of the Russian Federation [23] .

According to the relative rates of depopulation during the post-Soviet period, Bilibino is second only to another settlement in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug - the city of Pevek [24] .

Economics

Industry

In the past, the city was based on one of the largest gold mining enterprises of the USSR - the Bilibino Mining and Processing Plant , as well as Anyui Geological Exploration Expedition . Now the plant does not work, and the expedition continues to function as a private company. Alluvial gold is mined in the Bilibino area by small artisans. 20 km from Bilibino, a large indigenous gold deposit is being developed (the Caralveem mine ).

Energetics

Bilibino NPP is located near the city with a total electric capacity of 48 MW, providing the city with electric and thermal energy. The first unit with the EGP-6 reactor was brought to the power level on January 12, 1974. It is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern .

In 2011, a decision was made to begin decommissioning the station starting in 2019. A basic fuel storage facility is being built in the village, which is needed to supply the designed Diesel Power Plant, which, in turn, is necessary to begin decommissioning the NPP (the planned construction start date is 2015). A separate energy complex is being designed to supply the city with electric and heat energy.

Agriculture

A greenhouse is operating - the municipal unitary enterprise “Rosinka Vegetable Factory”. The area of ​​greenhouse complexes is 0.75 ha. In 2014, the company grew 69.1 tons of vegetable products [25] . The number of staff is 22 people [26] . The factory grows fresh vegetables, produces and sells up to 30 types of canned vegetables. Some of the areas of greenhouses were given for growing flowers.

Food industry

The city has a food company and a food factory producing bakery and confectionery products; canned meat, fish and seafood products.

Education and social infrastructure

  • Secondary school (two buildings), two kindergartens ("Alyonushka" and "Fairy Tale"), Center for Leisure and Folk Arts, children's art school, children's and youth sports school and sports hall "Iskra", Center for Continuing Education, House of Culture.
  • Branch of the state educational institution of secondary vocational education "St. Petersburg Industrial and Economic College", educational and industrial complex PTU-1.
  • The branch of the state budgetary healthcare institution “Chukotka District Hospital” is the 105-bed interdistrict medical center GBUZ. [27] [28]
  • Hotel "Severyanka", a communications center, a wide network of shops, a library, a museum of local lore, a swimming pool (opened in 2013), a bathhouse, and a gym. There is an atelier for sewing and repairing clothes, photo salons, a cafe, and a restaurant.

According to the Master Plan, construction of an indoor sports complex has begun in Bilibino, and it is also planned to build a regional center for sanatorium treatment [29] .

Transport

Bilibino is connected with the villages of the region, the mines and the city of Pevek by numerous dirt roads and winter roads. A wide pebble and dirt track has been built connecting the regional center with the seaport on the Kolyma River - the Cape Verde , from where the main supply of the city with everything necessary is provided.

Air communication with the city is carried out through the Keperway airport , located in the village of the same name , where a 36-kilometer year-long highway of category IV with a hard (unpaved) road is laid.

There are two bus routes: one city and one suburban "Bilibino - Keperway" [30] . They are served by the municipal motor transport enterprise of the Bilibino municipal district. Rolling stock: LAZ-695N , MAZ-103 .

Religion

The first Orthodox parish in the city arose in 1991, four years later the community was given the building of the former Pioneer House. Soon after, it was decided to build a new church on the antenna field. In 2009, it was completed and named in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov [31] .

In 2004, during the celebration of the centenary of the canonization of St. Seraphim of Sarov, the Poklonniy Cross was erected on the Aliskerov Hill .

Media

  • In 1968, a monument to Yu. A. Bilibin was unveiled. The pedestal was a huge boulder of the ice age weighing about 20 tons. In the niche of the pedestal is a bust of Yuri Alexandrovich Bilibin.
  • A metal composition dedicated to the 45th anniversary of Bilibino, in the square in front of the cinema.
  • An observation deck on the Orbita hill - it offers a beautiful view of the entire city.

The climate of the tundra is very cold throughout the year. According to the Köppen climate classification , the Arctic climate (ET index). The average annual temperature is -13.9 ° C, about 198 mm of precipitation falls annually.
