Mardakert district ( armenian Մարդակերտի շրջան ) is an administrative unit of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of the Azerbaijan SSR .

History
It was formed on August 8, 1930 during the transition to the regional administrative-territorial division called the Jebertsky district . September 17, 1939 was renamed the Mardakert region .
The administrative center of the district was the village of Mardakert . There were 3 urban-type villages in the district: Madagiz (status since 1943), Mardakert (since 1960), Leninavan (since 1966) [1] . It was the largest area and population area of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region. It had a predominantly Armenian population.
On September 2, 1991, at the joint session of the Nagorno-Karabakh Regional and Shaumyan District Councils of People's Deputies of the Azerbaijan SSR within the borders of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region ( NKAO ) of the Azerbaijan SSR and the adjacent Shaumyan District of the Azerbaijan SSR , the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic was proclaimed.
During the Karabakh conflict, the NKR retained control over most of the territory of the former Mardakert region of the NKAR, transformed into the Martakert region of the NKR . Part of the territory of the former Mardakert region of NKAO is under the control of Azerbaijan and is included in the Terter region .
