Appearance

Dwarf marmosets are one of the smallest primates. Their size is only from 11 to 15 cm, not counting the tail length from 17 to 22 cm. The weight of dwarf marmosets is from 100 to 150 g. Their coat is thick and long and is painted golden brown on the upper side. The underside is white or orange. Long tufts of hair on the head and chest give the impression of a mane .

Distribution

Dwarf marmosets live in the Amazon , in southern Colombia , Ecuador , the northern regions of Peru and Bolivia , as well as in western Brazil . Often settle on the fringes of the forest, along the banks of the rivers and in the jungle flooded with seasonal floods. Most of their lives are spent on trees, but sometimes they descend to the ground.

Behavior

Dwarf marmosets are active in the morning and afternoon and live on trees. They move on four legs, including along vertical branches, and are able to jump to a meter. Dwarf marmosets live in tribal groups consisting of several generations. Mutual grooming plays an important role in their social relationships. Dwarf marmosets mark their territory with secretions secreted from special glands, and strangers from other groups, as a rule, are screamed out. Sometimes it can even come to fights.

Nutrition

Dwarf Marmoset

The food of dwarf marmosets consists of wood juices, for the sake of which they gnaw the bark with their sharp incisors . Sometimes they also feed on insects , spiders or fruits .

Reproduction

According to some sources, dwarf marmosets lead a monogamous lifestyle, although other sources claim that females mate with several males. After pregnancy, lasting up to 150 days, as a rule, two cubs are born. The father and other males from the group help in raising offspring, carry them on their backs and bring their mothers to feed with milk . At the age of two, young dwarf marmosets become sexually mature . The longest life span observed in these animals was 11 years.

Threats

Since dwarf marmosets are not very demanding in the choice of living space, they are quite common and are not threatened with extinction.
