Biography

Born on March 6, 1931 in Gradizhsk (now the Globin district of the Poltava region of Ukraine) in a musical family: mother - Evdokia Andreevna - was considered the first singer in rural gatherings, father - Ivan Afanasevich - played the balalaika and guitar [1] .

In 1946 he entered the Poltava College of Music, but was not accepted "due to lack of hearing." He studied at the Kiev Music Evening School for a year, where the brothers George and Plato Mayborody taught music. Unloaded cars at the station, earned money at schools, played in restaurants.

In 1948-1952 he studied at the Zhytomyr College of Music named after V.S. Kosenko . In 1957 he graduated from the Kiev Conservatory (now the P.I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine ) with a composition class from N. N. Vilinsky .

In 1956-1961 - teacher of music theory at the Kiev Pedagogical Institute. M. Gorky (now the National Pedagogical University named after M.P. Drahomanov ).

Best known as songwriter (about 500). The author of romances, ballads, operas, operettas, an oratorio and film music.

The author of 9 poetry collections, including “Melody” (1977), “Mom’s krill” (1999), “Shuras” (2001) [2] .

In 1976-1994 - Chairman of the Kiev organization of the Union of Composers of Ukraine . Since 1968 - Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR. Member of the Union of Writers of Ukraine (2000) [2] . Since 1992 - Member of the Committee on State Prizes of Ukraine named after T. Shevchenko at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine . One of the founders of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

He died on May 6, 2003 in Kiev after a stroke [3] . He was buried at the Bike cemetery .
