The rating of football associations and, accordingly, the distribution of places in the 2000/2001 Champions League among countries was formed on the basis of the UEFA odds table , which for this draw took into account the results of clubs in official European club competitions from the 1994/1995 season to the 1998/1999 season inclusive [1] .

The Champions League 2000/01 draw involves 72 teams from 48 UEFA associations. Each association has the right to submit a certain number of teams to participate in the draw in accordance with the coefficient after the 1998/1999 Euro Cup season [2] of each of the associations:
- Associations taking places from 1 to 3 (Spain, Italy and Germany): 4 teams
- Associations taking places from 4 to 6 (France, England and the Netherlands): 3 teams
- Associations taking places from 7 to 15: 2 teams
- Associations taking places from 16 to 49: 1 team
