The Champions League 2000/01 draw involves 72 teams from 48 UEFA associations. Each association has the right to submit a certain number of teams to participate in the draw in accordance with the coefficient after the 1998/1999 Euro Cup season [2] of each of the associations:

  • Associations taking places from 1 to 3 (Spain, Italy and Germany): 4 teams
  • Associations taking places from 4 to 6 (France, England and the Netherlands): 3 teams
  • Associations taking places from 7 to 15: 2 teams
  • Associations taking places from 16 to 49: 1 team

First qualification round

  • 20 association champions from 29 to 49 (except Liechtenstein)

Second qualification round

  • 10 clubs that won the first qualifying round
  • 12 champions of associations 17-28 places
  • 6 clubs, runners-up in associations of 10-15 places

Third qualification round

  • 14 clubs that won the second qualifying round
  • 7 champions of associations 10-16 places
  • 3 clubs, runners-up in associations of 7-9 places
  • 6 clubs that took third places in associations 1-6 places
  • 2 clubs that took fourth places in associations 1 and 3 places
