Monument to the Afrikaans language

Monument to the Afrikaans language in South Africa

Afrikaans Language Monument ( Afrikaanse Taalmonument ) is a monument in the town of Parle in the Western Cape of South Africa , erected in 1975 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the recognition of the Afrikaans language as an official language, separate from the Dutch language of the Republic of South Africa.

On one of the slabs of the path leading to the monument, the phrase “DIT IS ONS ERNS” is carved, which can be translated as “we are serious [about this]” or “this is our seriousness”. Two phrases of famous South African poets about the Afrikaans language are also engraved on the plate at the entrance.
