General Information
Unlike the classic structure of the sonata, four-part cycle (Allegro / Allegretto - Adagio - Menuett / Trio - Finale / Allegro), Sonata No. 32 is a rare (but not the only Beethoven's) example of a two-part cycle:
- Maestoso : Allegro con brio ed appassionato; C minor
- Arietta : Adagio molto, semplice e cantabile, with the second part written in the form of a theme with five variations and a code; in C major
Additional facts
In Thomas Mann ’s novel “Doctor Faustus”, in one of the scenes, the hero performs a sonata and utters a large monologue about the hidden meaning of this music.
