Kafan

Kafan , or Kafan , is clothing ( shroud ) for the dead, according to Islam .

According to Sharia , it is forbidden to bury people in ordinary clothes, with the exception of martyrs ( martyrs ).

Kafan is preferably made from white matter of medium cost (relative to the welfare of the deceased). Kafan for men should consist of three parts:

  1. Isar , or isor , is a piece of calico for wrapping the body from head to toe,
  2. Lifafa , lythopha , or chadar - a piece of fabric slightly longer than isar also from calico, with which the body is closed on top of isar;
  3. Kamis , or kafani , is a seamless calico shirt that covers the body from the shoulders and below the knees.

In extreme cases, for men's kafan, you can only use isar and lifafu, without kamis. Sometimes they add tissue for the head - a turban .

For the women's kafan, in addition to the three listed, two more robes are necessary:

  1. Himar , chimor , or orni - a chintz shawl to cover a woman's head and hair;
  2. Sinaband , hirka , or pickaxe - a piece of chintz to cover the woman’s chest, covering the body from the armpits to the hips.

In extreme cases, only three robes can be used for a female kafan: isar, lifafu and himar, without camis and sinabanda. Female kamis is sometimes called deer .

If a small child is buried, it is permissible to use only two (or even one) pieces of fabric. A child born dead , or a fetus who died as a result of a miscarriage , is wrapped for burial in only one piece of fabric (lifaf).

Kafan is allowed to be made during the life of a person, in contrast to digging a grave. Kafan is worn on the deceased in a strictly defined way, after washing the body and before the funeral prayer .
