History
Early years
The history of the team begins on January 11, 1914 , when the Reggio Calabria Sports Union ( Italian: Unione Sportiva Reggio Calabria ) was founded. Initially, it consisted of 61 people. Each of the participants in the association has committed to pay a total of 15 pounds per person to the general fund each year. At that time, one of the main sports in the club was football. However, there were no suitable conditions for practicing this sport: they played football on a clay field (now the main hospital of the city of Ospedali Riuniti di Reggio Calabria is located there ), as well as in the area of the city called Modena. Only in 1922 the construction of the first stadium was started near the port of Reggio Calabria. The construction of the arena was completed in 1924, and it was called the Red Lantern ( Italian: Lanterna Rossa ).
Meanwhile, in 1922, the Reggio Calabria Sports Union entered the Italian Football Federation , and soon it received a new name - Reggio Calabria Football Club. April 14, 1924 the official opening of the stadium "Red Lantern". On the same day, a match was played with " Messina ", which took place as part of the second division of Italy 1923/1924. The meeting ended with a score of 3: 2 in favor of the Calabrian club. In October 1924, Regina won the regional football championship. In addition, a new uniform appeared in the team: instead of striped T-shirts from Florence , 15 completely black sets of the new uniform were brought.
Serie A
The current name was approved in 1984 .
In 1999, the team first appeared in Serie A , in 2001 again got into Serie B , but a year later it again rose to a higher level. In 2003, she could again fall into Serie B, but won the match for leaving Serie A. In 2006 , Regina was involved in a scandal involving fraud and bribery of judges , but remained in the elite Italian division.
Strait Derby
Regina’s principal rival is Messina . Matches with the participation of these teams were called the “ Strait Derby ” ( Italian: Derby dello Stretto ), as the regions of Calabria and Sicily are separated by the Strait of Messina . The first match took place in 1924, the last - in April 2007. In this confrontation, more victories were won by “Messina” (24), “Regina” had 16 matches won, and in 29 matches a draw was recorded between these teams.
