The Latin name of the genus is derived from lat. indigo or indicum - indigo , the so-called blue paint, brought from India, and ferre - carry , bring .

Deciduous shrubs , dwarf shrubs or herbaceous plants , more or less silky pubescent with adherent two-terminal, less often with simple hairs.

Leaf arrangement of the next. Leaves are pinnate, rarely trifoliate or simple; the leaflets are mostly opposite, on short petioles , entire, sometimes with small, awl-like stipules , fused at the base with petiole.

Inflorescence - axillary racemes . Butterfly-like flowers , pink, purple or white, with very early falling bracts . The calyx is bell - shaped, small, with five identical teeth, or a longer lower tooth; the nimbus is falling, the sail is rounded or oblong, the wings are oblong, slightly welded to the boat, the latter has a bulge or spur on one side. Ten stamens , two-part; anthers with apical binder ; ovary sessile or sessile, with many ovules ; the column is short, bent, with the capitatum .

Pods linear-oblong, less oblong or almost spherical, rounded or faceted, rarely flat, opening.

Bred by sowing seeds in greenhouses or warm greenhouses in winter or early spring, followed by transplanting seedlings for rearing in nurseries, as well as green cuttings in June - July under glass and root cuttings in open boxes in December.

Meaning and application

Decorative , flowering plants.

Some species, especially Indigofera dyeing ( Indigofera tinctoria ) and Indigofera suffruticosa , are used to obtain indigo dye and also Basma , a natural hair dye.
