Jan Bulgak ( Polish Jan Bułhak ; October 6, 1876 , Ostashin near Novogrudok - February 4, 1950 , Gizycko ( Lets ), Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship ; buried in Warsaw ) - Belarusian and Polish [5] photographer and photo artist, “father of Polish photography” [6] [7] , one of the pioneers of Polish art photography.

Biography

He graduated from the classical gymnasium in Vilna . In 1897 - 1899 he studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (did not finish). Having returned from Krakow, he lived in the estate of Peresek near Minsk , from where he sent correspondence to the Vilna newspapers.

Accidentally interested in photography. He studied photography in Dresden . In 1912 he opened a photo shop in Vilna on Portovaya Street 12 (it burned down in 1944 ; about 30 thousand negatives died, some survived).

By order of the magistrate in 1912 - 1915 he photographed the monuments of architecture of the city. Since 1919, he taught art photography at the Department of Fine Arts of Stephen Batory University ; Associate Professor ( 1939 ).

In 1919, he became one of the founders and chairman of the Vilnius Photo Club [8] (other sources claim that he founded and managed the photo club since 1927 ) [9] ; led him until the outbreak of World War II . He was one of the founders of the Polish Photo Club. In 1935 - 1939 he was one of the editors of the magazines Przegląd Fotograficzny , Fotograf Polski .

In 1945 he moved to Warsaw . He made about a thousand photographs of the destroyed and rebuilding Warsaw, about 2 thousand photographs of Western lands annexed to Poland. In 1947 he became the founder of the Union of Photographers of Poland and led it until his death.

Arranged photo exhibitions. He took part in more than 170 international exhibitions, received high awards.

Creativity

He gained fame with impressionist photographs of Vilna and the surrounding area, other Lithuanian areas. Bulgak’s photographs that convey the very aura of the Old Town and the surrounding landscape are referred to as works of “incomparable artistic value” [10] .

He wrote a number of books on the technique and art of photography, recollections of Ferdinand Ruschits ( 1939 ), as well as poems and short stories. He released a series of albums “Wędrówki fotografa” (I — IX, 1931 - 1936 ). Bulgak's photographs illustrate the city guide for Juliusz Klos [11] , a book about Vilno Jerzy Remer [12] and other publications. In 1935, he published a book about his journey from Vilna to Lake Naroch with 38 photographs [13] .

The work of Jan Bulgak influenced the development of artistic photography in Lithuania.
