Speed metal was an important stage in the development of metal music, but it did not form an independent direction with its aesthetics and a separate fandom. As a rule, this genre is not attributed to the group as a whole, but to individual albums and songs of different groups, performing also thrash, power or heavy metal.

Speed metal is characterized by a rather high speed of execution (higher than that of the "classic" heavy metal). The speed metal genre is characterized by a high tempo of the game and short solo guitar inserts between verses. Vocals in speed metal are most often more aggressive than in heavy metal, it is hoarse, with splitting of the ligaments ( screaming ), both low and piercing falsetto .

Speed metal is close to thrash metal , but more melodic and demonstrates significantly less punk rock influence. Power metal , a related genre, is more complex and melodic guitar parts, clean high vocals and backing vocals.

Origins

Acceleration of traditional hard rock and heavy metal began in the late 60s. An example is Led Zeppelin 's song “Communication Breakdown” [1] . The song is sustained at a fairly fast pace, and it uses the characteristic fast metal riffing for speed metal.

The albums Deep Purple In Rock , Fireball , Machine Head , released in the early 70s, played a big role in the formation of the genre. The songs “ ”, “ Flight Of The Rat ”, “ ”, “ Highway Star ” are fast-paced songs, including solos on Hammond's organ and guitars. The song " Highway Star " is often cited as one of the earliest examples of classic speed metal [2] . Also, as one of the earliest examples of classic speed metal, the song “ Fireball ” is often cited because of the constant riffing on a single note typical of this genre.

Queen's song from their 1973 Queen debut album, “Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll," may well be considered an example of early speed metal, due to a fairly fast and heavy game. Their other song, Stone Cold Crazy, from the 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack can also serve as an example of early thrash / speed metal [3] due to its fast tempo, as well as its powerful drum and guitar sounds. Samples of early speed metal include riffs from the beginning and conclusion of Queen's song “Brighton Rock”. Another example of speed metal is the song “ Sheer Heart Attack ” from the News of the World album.

Other examples include the songs Exciter Judas Priest , Symptom of the Universe , Into The Void Black Sabbath , Set Me Free Sweet .

The formation of the genre was also influenced by American rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose . "Black Train" from the album "Warner Brothers Presents ... Montrose!", Other songs by Montrose .

In 1980-1982 the first demos of speed and thrash metal bands are starting to appear.

History

There is no unequivocal opinion about the first music album in the genre of speed metal. It is believed that this was the debut album of Metallica Kill 'em All in 1983, but in fact the genre was finally formed on the first album of the Canadian group Exciter Heavy Metal Maniac , released in the same 1983, but a little earlier than the debut of Metallica . Also, the Killing Is My Business ... and Business Is Good! and Peace Sells ... but Who's Buying? Megadeth bands. Speed metal also includes the album Metal on Metal (1982) by the Canadian group Anvil .

Speed metal is traditionally classified as Motörhead [4] , the early albums of Blind Guardian ( Battalions of Fear , Follow the Blind ), Helloween ( Walls of Jericho ), Running Wild of the period Under Jolly Roger - Masquerade , the first album of Metallica Kill 'em All , first Anthrax Fistful of Metal album, early works by Iced Earth , Rage , Judas Priest music from the Painkiller album period, as well as Living Death , Scanner , Agent Steel , Grave Digger , Sacred Steel , Angel Dust , Chroming Rose , Riot's work (Thundersteel album )

Impact

Speed metal became the immediate predecessor of power metal , and most of the major groups of speed eventually switched to performance in this style. Another important consequence of speed metal is the emergence of thrash metal . Finally, in the solo works of virtuoso guitarists, neoclassical metal was born, which is a mixture of speed metal and classical music.
