Biography

Mother - a native of Venezuela , father - a German Jew, from Hamburg came to Venezuela in search of fortune, became a close friend of President Antonio Guzman Blanco, but after threats from the enemies of the president in 1878 he moved with his family to Paris. Reynaldo wrote the first waltz for piano in 1883 . He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Gounod , Saint-Saens , Jules Massenet , his classmates were Ravel , Cortot . In 1888 he wrote a romance to the verses of V. Hugo , which immediately became famous. He made friends with the Alfons Daudet family, with Verlaine , composed a cycle of songs based on his poems (Songs under the Hop). His vocal compositions became fashionable, the composer became a regular in the best metropolitan salons, where he performed his songs and music of other composers, met Mallarmé , Edmond Goncourt , Proust , Sarah Bernhardt (in 1930 he wrote a book about her).

In 1894 - 1896 was in close relations with Proust ; they were invited to the salon and to the chateau of Révione Madame Lemer , traveled together, made general plans, corresponded (epistolary published); many details of this time were included in Proust’s novel by Jean Santoy . He was friends with Liana de Puzhi , Cleo de Merod . Together with Proust and Sarah, Bernard defended Dreyfus .

During the First World War, he volunteered for the front, then served in the Ministry of Defense.

He wrote music for stage and cinema, symphonic, piano and vocal compositions to the verses of Marcelina Debord-Valmore , Leconte de Lily , Theodore de Banville , Jean Moreas , Henri de Rainier , R. L. Stevenson and others, left several ballets, operas and operetta. Collaborated with S. Diaghilev and his troupe.

Since 1920 , he taught at the Normal School of Music , was friends with Pablo Casals , Jacques Thibault , Nadia Boulanger . Collaborated with Sasha Guitri , Arletti , Magda Tagliaferro .

During the Second World War , fearing Nazi anti-Semitism , he was forced to leave Paris, lived in Cannes , Monte Carlo . Returning to the capital in 1945 , he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts and headed the Paris Opera .
