Biography

Sean Paul was born in Kingston ( Jamaica ) on January 9, 1973 in a wealthy family [3] . His ancestors lived in Jamaica for several centuries: his paternal grandfather was of Sephardic (Jewish) descent, from a family that emigrated from Portugal, his paternal grandmother was of Afro-Caribbean descent; mother - English and Chinese descent [4] , (in Jamaica, there are many diasporas with a long history). Many of Sean Paul's relatives, including parents, were professionally engaged in swimming [5] . Sean's mother, being an artist, instilled in her son a love of art and music. She dreamed that her son would receive a classical music education in piano , but the boy desperately resisted this form of training. He did not want to perform what was written by others, even if by great composers. Young Sean did not want to learn to read sheet music. And the future musician managed to convince his mother that songs were born in his head, and he dreams of performing exactly what he writes.

Youth and career start

When Sean was 13 years old, his mother gave the boy his first musical instrument - Yamaha keyboards, which cost $ 30. With the help of a long-awaited gift and a home computer, Sean Paul learned not only to display the melody that was born in the mind, but also to write arrangements for it.

It should be added that the parents of Sean Paul were always more than friendly with the sport, and this love was inherited by their son. As a teenager, he seriously engaged in water polo and swimming. Sean participated in many national and international competitions in the late 80s and early 90s. It was during various sports trips that the guy began to acquire DJ skills. Athletes need a good emotional discharge, and often visit discos and clubs, have picnics in between starts. At such events, Sean Paul got the opportunity to learn the art of DJing.

Despite the fact that at first the young musician dreamed only of a career as a producer , he still did not give up trying to try himself as an author of music and lyrics.

Musical career

Sean Paul’s father was familiar with the local reggae guitarist Kat Cour for many years, and he gave his son a small patronage, allowing Kura to listen to the demos of his offspring. The musician, seeing the serious potential in the young man, invited him to cooperate. It was Kat Chur who became the first teacher for Sean Paul, teaching him how to write songs and which songs to write in order to become popular in Jamaica and in other countries. In his opinion, Sean was supposed to write mainly carefree songs about girls, love and sex . As time has shown, a young musician could write extraordinary songs about ordinary things.

So Sean Paul became a member of the reggae - team Third World. The group produced several of Sean's demos, but things were going slowly, and only a couple of years later the young musician ended up in a recording studio with his new manager. In addition, for the latter, this was the first experience in that capacity.

Sean first appeared in 1996 with the song "Fat Eh Nah", then in 1999 with a single entitled "Baby Girl", which became a big hit in Jamaica. After that, Sean Paul began working with producer Jeremy Harding. Together with him, the young musician recorded the songs "Infitrate" and "Excite me" - the singles that made Sean Paul a star in many countries of the Caribbean. The next song - “Deport them” - topped the official chart of Jamaica and opened the way for the young artist to the American market. This song was tightly rotated on the most popular Miami radio stations, and became a hit in the New York hip-hop party. Sean became the first reggae performer to be invited to perform at Hot 97's Summer Jam, one of the most important annual rhythm and blues and hip-hop festivals. There, the young musician was able to get acquainted with such artists as Aliya , Snoop Dogg and others. After such success, the artist began to experiment more with the sound and make attempts to combine styles such as dancehall reggae and hip-hop . In 1999, Sean Paul joined forces with Mr. Vegas to record the song "Hot Gal Today". The composition entered the soundtrack of the film "Shaft" with the participation of Samuel L. Jackson. In March 2000, when “Hot Gal Today” gained popularity on the US East Coast, the young artist's debut album, entitled “ Stage One ”, was released . Sean Paul became the first reggae performer whose two singles at the same time were put on rotation at the most popular American radio stations. Thanks to the support of the radio, Hot Gal Today reached sixth place on the Billboard hip-hop chart.

At the same time, Sean Paul joined forces with Mr Vegas and DMX and recorded the song “Top Shotter”, which was included in the soundtrack for the film “ Belly ”. This hit was a new step for the young artist on the path to fame and success. According to a 2000 poll by Billboard magazine, Sean Paul's debut album took 4th place in the list of best reggae style albums, and the performer found himself in third place in the ranking of reggae artists.

In 1999, the artist conducted an intensive tour, performing in Europe, the USA and Japan and preparing a bridgehead for his next work.

Sean Paul recorded the new album with producers Tony Kelly and Jeremy Harding. Album Dutty Rock , released in 2002 , as it turned out, was destined to become a coup in reggae and hip-hop music. The musician and his producers managed to find a perfectly balanced combination of dancehall reggae and hip-hop to make the resulting cocktail of styles an equal part of the mainstream.

In 2002, the first single from the album - a song called "Gimme the light" - made it to the top five of the American chart. Even more success was expected by the second single “ Get Busy ”, which, slowly climbing up the steps of the American hit parade, managed to lead it in May 2003. The album itself was in the top ten and its circulation quickly exceeded the millionth mark. The composition “Get busy”, becoming a megahit in most European countries, opened the way for the musician to the European market. In 2003, Sean Paul became the most rotated artist on the most popular radio stations around the world. Billboard magazine recognized the musician as "The best reggae performer of the year."

At the end of 2003, several songs at once, in the recordings of which was attended by Sean Paul, found themselves in high places on charts around the world. We are talking about the song " Like Glue " - the third single from the album Dutty Rock , as well as the joint work of Sean with the singers Blu Cantrell ("Breathe") and Beyoncé (" Baby Boy "). The duo of Paul and Beyonce eight weeks in a row topped the official US singles chart.

On September 27, 2005, his third solo album The Trinity was released, which was distinguished by a large number of super-popular singles: “We Be Burnin '”, “Ever Blazin'”, “Give It up to Me”, “Temperature” and “Never Gonna Be The Same. "

In 2008, Sean Paul recorded a video for the song Hit Dem Up together with Farenheit and his brother Jigzagula .
