Great falls

Great Falls is the city and administrative center of Cascade County, Montana , USA . The population is 56,690 people. according to the 2000 census. The name Great Falls comes from the corresponding name of the waterfalls, through which members of the Lewis and Clark expedition had to cross during the exploration of the Louisiana purchase areas in 1805 - 06 . Great Falls is located along the Missouri River , close to several waterfalls. The city is located at an altitude of 1015 m. According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of ​​the city is 51.6 km², of which 50.5 km² is land and 1.1 km² is water. The climate is continental, arid. According to the 2000 census, the city's population consists of 56,690 people, 23,834 households, and 14,848 families. The population density is 2909.1 people. at 1123.0 / km². The city has 25,250 housing units located at a density of 500.2 / km². Racial and ethnic composition of the population: 89.96% - white , 0.95% - African Americans , 5.09% - Native Americans , 0.86% - Asians, 0.09% - Island Americans ( Guamans , Hawaiians , Samoans ), 2.39% are Hispanic-speaking Americans and Hispanics .

The city has 23,834 households, 30.1% of which have children under 18; 47.4% are couples; 11.1% - households where there is no spouse, and the role of the head of the family is assigned to the woman; 37.7% are non-family households.

Age composition of the population: 24.9% - up to 18 years old, 9.0% - from 18 to 24, 27.7% - from 25 to 44, 22.7% - from 45 to 64, 15.7% - from 65 and older. The average age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males.

Great Falls was founded in 1883 by Paris Gibson and railroad tycoon James J. Hill as an energy city for exploiting the hydroelectric energy of waterfalls. The historian William E. Furdell called Great Falls “an entrepreneurial city” and also said that in the city “it is impossible not to pay attention to the numerous cemeteries and gallows”.

The post office in the city was built on July 10, 1884 [3] . The first postmaster was Paris Gibson [3] .

In 1889, the construction of the Black Eagle station began, and the next year the city was already provided with electricity.

Great Falls soon became a booming center of supply and industry, and by 1900 could claim the place of the largest city in Montana . By 1908, the construction of the so-called “highest chimney in the world” was completed, the construction of which was the largest employer in the city, the Anaconda copper mining company. The building was a huge melting furnace with a height of more than 154 meters. The Big Trumpet immediately became a local attraction.

During World War II, the city ​​was the starting point of the route for the distillation of American aircraft in the USSR under a Lend-Lease agreement. From Great Falls the route passed through Canada and Alaska to the USSR, where aircraft were driven along Alsib to Krasnoyarsk [4] .

In Great Falls, the Mamstrom Air Force Base and 341st Air Missile Wing are deployed. The 341st Management Group manages and provides for the launch, tracking, and security monitoring of intercontinental ballistic missiles .

Missiles and service buildings are dispersed throughout the largest missile complex in the Western Hemisphere, covering an area of ​​59570 km². Great Falls International Airport is the site where the 120th fighter wing of the US National Guard is located . This wing is equipped with fighter model F-16 Fighting Falcon .

Great Falls also houses the 889th Army Reserve Unit.

Marian's Case

The case of Marian took place in Great Falls in August 1950 . Nicholas "Nick" Mariana , CEO of Great Falls Baseball Club, and his secretary watched two "bright, silver balls" flying over an empty stadium. Mariana photographed these objects on camera, the film was one of the first evidence of the existence of a UFO . The incident received wide publicity throughout the country and is considered the first significant evidence in favor of UFOs.
